WHAT ARE NEODYMIUM MAGNETS

In today’s advanced world, magnets have been deemed crucial for the production of an enormous number of goods in automobile, electronics and clean-energy production industries. Rare earth magnets are basically permanent magnets that are comprised of alloys of rare earth elements. Introduced in the early 1980’s neodymium is the strongest as well as the most affordable kind of rare earth magnet that exists today. NIB is basically created from Iron, Boron and neodymium itself. Such magnets are now commercially available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, grades and surface coating. Neo magnets are metallic in appearance, extremely strong for their size and can pull their own weight nearly thousand times over.  Because of this amazing ability, these super magnets are used in a wide array of incredibly versatile applications including computer apparatus, jewelry as well as toys among many others.

Some of the vital magnet properties considered to judge the quality of each specific magnet includes the strength of the magnetic field i.e. remnance, resistance towards demagnetization i.e. coercivity and curie temperature at which point the magnet would demagnetize. Fortunately for NIB, they have a very high coercivity and resonance rate making them ideal products for industrial use. However, neodymiums are susceptible to temperature fluctuations and can crack, catch fire, lose their magnetism and basically fail to function properly when not kept in ambient temperatures (or above their set curie temperature). Moreover, the strength of any neodymium magnets is measured through a process known as grading. Such as, higher value indicates a stronger magnet generally ranging from N35 to N52. Due to a large proportion of iron in neo magnets, they are easily prone to corrosion and therefore must be coated with a protective layer in order to ensure durability and long life. Among all other layers, a triple nickel-copper-nickel coat has proved to be most effective and long lasting for maximum energy output and usage. Neodymium magnets are readily available in many shapes such as disc, rod, ring, block, cylinder, sphere and even customized in accordance to the user’s requirements. Among all sizes the flat and round disc magnets have proved to be the most common and economical neodymium magnets. They can be magnetized axially as well as through the thickness and can be found within a wide range of diameters. One common application of disc NIB is to be fixed into drilled holes.

However, it is integral for all users to handle such strong magnets with extreme caution in order to prevent any long term injury. Neo magnets of such immense strength towards all metals should be kept away from children and not treated as toys whatsoever.

Details about Neodymium Magnets

Neodymium magnets and rare earth magnets are not the same thing. Moreover, neodymium magnets are used in a variety of purposes. It has various useful attributes. It is the most common type of rare earth magnets; those are used in numerous household applications. It is true that these Neodymium magnets are strongest substances among all other magnets available on the earth.

As the Neodymium magnets are very strong in nature they are identified with the grades like N35, N40, N42, N45, N48, N50, N52. It is the magnetized field or the maximum strength they can be magnetized to. A greater number shows an increased magnetic power; while the stronger the magnet is more brittle as well.

It is not advisable to drill, cut or machine neodymium magnets. Experts do not advise you to do so as the substance is very hard and brittle in nature. Any attempt to do the same may cause a break or damage to the magnet. Moreover the heat produced in the process of machining may result demagnetize to the magnet. So you cannot solder or weld a neodymium magnet. The high heat generated will do damage to its magnetized property. There is a chance of getting fire too. You should consider the temperature aspect while dealing with Neodymium magnets. This is a magnet very sensitive to heat. Basing on the grade this heat may demagnetize and lose their magnetic strength. Use of Salt water is not good for a neodymium magnet.

Over the period of time also the neodymium magnets will not lose their strength. Neodymium magnets are the strongest and most permanent type of magnets in the world. Only if you over heat it, there is a chance of lose of their strength.
No health risk is associated with the use of neodymium magnets. Persons even exposed to this type of material will not be open to any known health risks. There may be a chance of risk if the person is having pacemaker. For more detail you can take the help of a health expert. Magnets have some health benefit and that is the reason why it is used in medical science as well in the process of healing and medication. Hence it is true that Strong magnets can cause some physical hazard if not handled carefully. So follow the safety measures while you are dealing with magnets.

No, it is not advisable to place a magnet directly near to the computer or hard drive. It may cause harm to your computer. The Magnetic power can damage the things like floppy disks, etc. A powerful neodymium magnet is there inside a hard drives already. Keeping another one may affect your data.

Magnets Safety

Magnets are the products used for different application. Not only it is incredibly helpful for practical purposes but can be used for fun as well. However magnets are having some hazard that we almost ignore. So it is very important to know all about it in detail before having a magnet. If you are ordering magnet online then it is significant for you to check the product label clearly. Sometimes you will find a warning brochure included with the product. The following are some important tips that should be kept in mind while handling magnet.

Magnet has its magnetic field. If you place two magnets side by side, you can see how they attract each other. Even small magnets have a great magnetic power.

Many types of magnets are available in the market. Among them the commonly used magnet is neodymium; it is used in many applications. Neodymium magnets are the strongest type of magnets in the earth. The magnetic force that they use is too high. Sometimes the force at which it attracts the other magnet may cause harm to others in case necessary measures will not be followed. You should be cautious enough and should take safety precautions while dealing with magnet else it can cause you serious injury.

The following are some safety precautions that should be considered always while handling magnet.
  • Keep your eyes away from the magnet. Try to wear a wear safety goggles while you are handing large magnets.
  • For the safety of your hands do not forget to wear gloves when you are dealing magnets to prevent pinching.
  • Do not allow your children play with Neodymium magnets. It may cause harm to them.
  • Always keep magnets at a distance of at least 20cm away from sensitive storage and electronic devices.
Neodymium magnets may cause hazard to the health of your children. So they should never be allowed to play with the same.  It has been seen that small magnets sometimes cause blood blisters and cuts while tiny magnets can be the reason on severe injury if swallowed.

It is observed that if more than one magnet is swallowed, then there is a chance that they can attract each other all the way through the walls of the intestines. There is a chance that they get stuck and pinch the digestive tract resulting in major swelling. Often it can be serious enough requiring surgery and even life-threatening injuries. So it is advisable to keep all your neodymium products out of the reach of your children.

Types of Ferrite Magnet

The good thing that a Ferrite Magnets  has is the easy availability. As the raw material it uses is available in sufficient quantity, there is no chance of having a scarcity in the production Ferrite Magnets .It is a type of ceramic magnets. And like all other ceramic magnets, it has the easily breaking quality. But due to its high-coercive attribute, demagnetization is not possible. The raw material used to make Ferrite magnets is the ferric oxide. It is a cheap magnet among all other magnets available in market due to its easy availability. Moreover, it is a magnet that can be used in flat forms. For the preparation of Ferrite Magnets, the magnet is mold by pressing with ferric oxide dust. Then it is to be heated in a furnace in a temperature of 1200 degrees Celsius approximately. Therefore they are fitted for mass production and can be available at economical prices. The two basic types of Ferrite magnets are Anisotropic Ferrite and Isotropic Ferrite.

Anisotropic Ferrite Magnet

As we know the coercive force in this magnet is strong, it cannot be demagnetization. It is a ceramic magnet. Ferrite magnet is extremely anticorrosive. The unique feature of this magnet is that, it is best fitted for a flat shape magnet to use. While the weak point here is that it is supposed to be easily broken. From long back Ferrite magnet is used in the mechanism of audio speakers and headphones. But now due technical innovation it gets lighter. In recent days Ferrite magnet is used progressively more for automobile motors or generators.

The other saving grace is the abundant supply of raw material of Ferrite magnet. As there is plenty of ferric oxide, used as raw materials of Ferrite magnet, it is possible for the manufacturers to produce the magnet at the lowest price amongst all other present day magnets.

A wet type of Granulated powder of ferric oxide mixed with a little portion of strontium with also water into a slurry state. After that it has been poured and pressed in a metal mold. Then the real molding process starts. It is done in a compact magnetic field so that even smallest units of the magnet are aligned in a certain specific direction, building them an Anisotropic Ferrite magnet. Following undergone through the heated furnace, thus the magnets are refined and polished into the preferred sizes of requirement and rinse for a finishing touch.

A dry type Granulated powder of ferric oxide is pressed in a mold, and then heated in a furnace to make this magnet. However, the magnetic force present in it is approximately 7% weaker than the wet type of magnet.

Isotropic Ferrite Magnet:

We can get Isotropic Ferrite Magnet by mixing a correct portion of ferric oxide with a few percent of Barium. It is powered with granulated before being pressed. Her no need to do the molding with a magnetic field. The magnetism present in it is about half of that of an Anisotropic Ferrite magnet as the direction of the magnetic force aligns is in an axial or radial direction.

Things You Must Know About Ferrite Magnets

Ferrite Magnets are the Sintered magnets also known as ceramic magnets made from the material like ferric oxide, which you can find abundant in supply. Therefore you can expect a consistent flow of Ferrite magnets throughout the time. It can be available in lower and budgeted prices in a continuous manner. Among all other magnets in the market it is supposed to have the lowest cost possible. Because of its high-coercive feature, it will have a less chance of demagnetization. This type of magnet is best suited to be used on flat forms. This type of magnets can be produced by pressing a fine-powder of ferric oxide. Then mold and heated keeping it in a heat of approximately 1200 degrees Celsius. The main benefit of Ferrite Magnets is that they are resistant to corrosion. So they are best fitted for mass production and can be available in a lower rate. There are two mare categories of ferrite magnets. Those are: Anisotropic Ferrite and Isotropic Ferrite

Some distinctiveness attributes of Ferrite Magnets:
  • A consistent accessibility of raw material makes it available all the time.
  • It can be ensured at a cheap price.
  • Enhanced coerciveness quality makes it less likely to demagnetize.
  • It is however identical to other ceramics ferrite magnets as it is brittle, and at the same time is fit for mass production as it is made by molding with a fine powder coating of ferric oxide.
  • Though having a sable gravity of 4.8g/cm3, as compared to other magnets these are of much lighter weight than any other magnetic products.
  • You can place it 2-10 poles on a flat surface.
  • It has an additional possibility to magnetize multi-poles along the circumference of the magnet that is the reason why it has a wide range of application in meters and motors.
  • Useful for the materials to create rubber magnets and plastic magnets.
Ferrite magnets have a wide range of application for its distinguished features. It is a strong material substance which can be used in various products, like device for electrical instruments, stationery products, automobile motors and generators, household appliances, and healthcare equipments as well. Now it is used in industrial purposes to run extreme machineries. Ferrite magnet is extremely anticorrosive. But the main drawback associated with it is that it is fragile in nature, means cannot withstand against more pressure.

Magnets in Generators

An electric generator is a device which turns the mechanical energy into electrical. A generator is a machine that forces electric current to flow through an external circuit. The mechanical energy come from turbine steam engine, internal combustion engine, water falling through a turbine steam engine, wind turbine. A generator is helpful in providing almost all of the power necessary for electric power grid.

An electrical motor do the task of reserve conversion of electrical energy into mechanical energy. Therefore the mechanism of motors and generators are almost similar. Major motors are used to generate electricity mechanically and for that Ferrite Magnets are very useful.

Two types of generators are there. The first one is Alternative current generator while the second is Direct current generator. Horseshoe-type of magnets is useful for both sorts of generators. The use of this type of magnet is useful in case of anticlockwise rotation of the shaft. Thus it is advisable to use this type of magnet when the shaft is rotating in an adverse direction. At that time the force is going upwards while the magnetic field lines are moving left to right. As a result Ferrite Magnets enables the current to flow in a circuit continuously to create electricity.

There is a link between electricity and magnetism. You can say that a generator is merely a device that is responsible to moves a magnet near a wire to make a consistent flow of electrons. The function that forces this movement varies to a great extent, starting from the steam engines to the nuclear fission, however the basic principle remains equal for all.

You can compare the function of a generator with a water pump try to push water through a pipe. The difference is that instead of water the generator uses Ferrite Magnets to push electrons along. The principle and mechanism is same. In case of a generator the magnet forces a certain number of electrons along and at the same time apply some amount of strength and pressure to the electrons.

The number of electrons used in an electrical circuit is the electron in motion is known as current or amperage. This is measured in amps. Voltage is the pressure used for pushing the electrons to function. It is measured in amps. The capacity of producing voltage of a generator is 1 amp at 6 volts at a spinning of 1,000 rotations per minute. The voltage is however the amount of pressure behind those electrons.

Magnets can help you solving frustrating problems of your home. So always consider to use magnets in different ways to fix the household issues.

Following are some useful techniques of using magnets to improve your lifestyle.

Firstly it is useful for cleaning up purposes. If you spilled some nails, pin or staples over the floor. You don’t need to collect them with stabbing your fingers. Just float a magnet over the surface. You can easily pick the fallen objects up.

Using magnets you will be easily store and hold various essential household items. You can fix a magnet in your fridge door, or to the bathroom door to store small things on that. Even you can put a magnet on the top of an ironing board so that after folding it also it will stay in proper place.

You can attach a block magnet to the cabinet and drawer of your bedroom to keep it closed always. It can be attached to the inside panel of the drawer at one side with the help of a double-sided tape and attach the other one to the door or drawer itself. The main thing is that both the magnets are lined up correctly. So that when you close the drawer it will keep the draw shut.

Sometimes we find our batteries get stubborn with its case and its very irritating trying to get a stuck battery out of its case. But the thing will be easier for you if you do it using strong magnetic power. So what you need to do is to put a magnet over the battery and see how easily it will pop out.

If you want to display your knives, then instead of buying an expensive knife holder, you can trust on a bar magnet. It will improve your home décor as well as is safe in use. The fashion of display on the wall will be appealing to the eyes.

You can also make an invisible tool holder through inserting a disc magnet into it. Then it can be very well used by drilling a series of holes in the back of a wooden board. You can fix it over the wall and can hang all your favorite tools onto it.
