Some New Applications of Neodymium Magnets

Thanks to the latest researches, today we are aware of even the most unexpected yet important uses of magnets in industries and in our daily life. In reality, we are completely surrounded by science and technology such that there are no limits to new applications of the available resources. This is applicable in case of neodymium magnets as well. As already known, these magnets belong to the group of rare-earth magnets and are the strongest ones available in the market. Since the invention of neodymium magnets in 1982, much advancement has taken place. Consequently, we have some amazing applications and facts about these magnets which can prove revolutionary for many industries and even some aspects of our daily life.

It is something quite obvious that neodymium magnets, being the strongest of all, can be used in almost all the known cases where magnetic field is required. They can replace other types of magnets and perform the required function very well. Such applications include electric generators, motors, door locks, speakers and computer hard disks. However, being relevant to our topic, we will focus more on those applications which are inspired from the availability of neodymium magnets. Their extra-ordinary strong magnetic field has led to some new developments which were not very likely before.

·         Neodymium Magnet Toys
These magnets toys are marketed in the form of spheres which are joined together to from different 3D structures. Neodymium magnet toys are also referred as children building set and in some cases, these are used for education purposes also. Strong neodymium magnet spheres are also ideal for conducting research and experiments in school labs.

·         Use in Sports Parachute Equipment
Parachuting is an increasingly popular sport, but risks of injury are a bit high. Regarding that, neodymium magnets are used in sports parachute equipment. This makes it easy to open and close the parachute reducing the risk of injury.

·         Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Scanners
This is perhaps the most interesting application of neodymium magnets in medical. MRI scanner is somewhat the latest technology in medicine which is used to scan the body for tumors and other similar health issues.

·         Surgical Linx Anti-reflux system
This is another application of neodymium magnets in medical. Linx anti-reflux system is actually a treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Neodymium magnets are surgically placed in the lower esophageal sphincter to cure this disease.

·         Maglev Trains
This exciting application of neodymium magnets is not known widely. Maglev is floating train where neodymium magnets are used to repel train engine from the track. This ensures a frictionless circulation.

Apart from the above-described applications, you can also use neodymium magnets at your home for creative purposes. These are not limited but may include cutlery bolder, decorations, metal detector, homemade compasses, jewelry clasps, picking up nails and screws etc. However, there are some important precautions you must take to ensure a safe use of these strong magnets. Due to their extremely high magnetic force, you need to be extra careful while handling them. Make sure you have no ferrous object with or around you. Otherwise, those ferrous objects will fly towards magnet causing serious injury. Also, keep neodymium magnets away from children. Even you should not give magnetic toys to children freely. This is because if these magnets are swallowed, they can cause digestive and respiratory problems leading to death. Finally, keep in mind that very high temperatures can decrease the magnetic strength of neodymium magnets.
